Prof. Francesco Paneni

Francesco Paneni is Leading Senior Cardiologist and Head of Translational Research at the University Heart Center, Zurich University Hospital. Moreover, he is Assistant Professor and Group Leader in Cardiovascular Epigenetics at University of Zurich, Schlieren Campus. Francesco earned his MD and PhD at the University of Rome “Sapienza”. During his training in Cardiology, he worked as cardiovascular research fellow at Mount Sinai Medical Centre in New York under the supervision of Prof. Valentin Fuster. After his PhD, he trained as a post-doctoral fellow at the Institute of Cardiovascular Physiology, University of Zurich and at the Center for Molecular Medicine (CMM) at Karolinska Institute, Sweden. A main goal of Paneni’s lab is to characterize the epigenetic mechanisms of myocardial and vascular damage in the setting of cardiometabolic disturbances. Prof. Paneni received several awards from the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and the American Heart Association (AHA). He is fellow of the European Society of Cardiology (FESC) and is part of clinical task forces and position papers from the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC) and European Society of Hypertension (ESH). He is associate editor of the International Journal of Cardiology and Cardiopulse Editor for the European Heart Journal. Furthermore, he is remote reviewer for the European Research Council (ERC) and over the last 5 years has received significant intramural and extramural funding (>1.3 Mio Euro) from prestigious institutions such as the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), the Swiss Heart Foundation and the EU Framework Programme. Finally, he is author of 137 peer-reviewed articles with several of them published in open access, top-ranked cardiovascular journals, with a total impact factor of 1397 and a H-index of 37.
