LEADERSHIP

• Clinical Director of the Centre for Prognosis Research at Keele University that was ranked as internationally excellent in the recent UK national Research Excellence Framework
• Lead a multidisciplinary centre of clinicians, data scientists and statisticians whose research interests focus around the use of routinely collected electronic healthcare data to inform the diagnosis, treatment and clinical outcomes of patients
• Responsible for the development and implementation of a clinical research strategy for the centre, and operational and line management of clinical staff
• I am senior clinical editor of TCTMD (https://www.tctmd.com/about-tctmd) the world’s leading resource for interventional cardiovascular news and education, catering to an audience of clinicians and researchers. The site provides breaking news and in-depth features covering interventional cardiology and beyond, providing an in-depth coverage across the spectrum of cardiovascular disease research and practice.
CLINICAL
• High volume practicing interventional cardiologist in the United Kingdom in one of the largest PCI centres in the UK (Royal Stoke Hospital). I have a special interest in intravascular imaging utilising OCT or IVUS in 100% of my cases. I have extensive experience of rotational atherectomy, laser, lithotripsy and complex LMS PCI.
• I am a course director of several international conferences including TCT Asia Pacific and Chip CTO india

RESEARCH

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS: BIG DATA

• My focus is to deliver high-quality, cutting-edge big data cardiology research linking electronic health data from patients with cardiovascular disease to inform the diagnosis, treatment, and clinical outcomes of real-world patients with cardiovascular disease.
• Our work is cross thematic, with work around interventional cardiology, cardio-oncology and multimorbidity focusing around studying clinical outcomes, complications and assessment of treatment efficacy of interventions / medical treatments using real world data derived from the national electronic healthcare records of patients with cardiovascular disease, as well as prognostic modelling leading development of risk stratification tools used for national reporting.
• My group uses national audit data derived from the national cardiovascular societies at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Outcomes Research (NICOR; https://www.ucl.ac.uk/nicor), data derived from primary care (Clinical Practice Research Datalink; https://www.cprd.com/intro.asp) as well as large datasets from the US such as from the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) to study outcomes in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
• I have published over 800 peer-reviewed papers in the highest impact international cardiovascular journals (h-index 83) using big data in populations with cardiovascular disease and our work has consistently attracted editorials from international leaders in the field and has received widespread media coverage.
• I was recently voted as one of the top 100 health pioneers in the UK by the #MadeAtUni campaign based on my work using Big Data and its implementation in patients with cardiovascular disease https://madeatuni.org.uk/keele-university/pioneering-treatment-coronary-heart-disease
• During the current COVID-19 crises I led a program of work analysing real-time CV data to provide information to the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) for the UK government and NHS England.
